Weight of the World

Did you know that astronauts grow in space? Some astronauts have become more than 4 centimeters taller during a mission.

The vertebrae are squished together in gravity. The vertebrae are spread apart slightly in space

Astronauts grow taller because their vertebrae are no longer pulled down on top of each other. As a result, the vertebrae spread apart slightly.

When they return to Earth the gravity pulls down on the body. This causes some bones, like vertebrae, to compress back together.
